Surströmming (fermented Baltic herring or, literally, soured Baltic herring), is one of Sweden’s most infamous products and is especially popular in northern Sweden.
This summer my woman Erin, decided that we had to try this Swedish delicacy “Surströmming”,
which basically is rotten fish in a can!
I have never even considered trying it, I’ve smelled it, and it’s the worst smell you can ever imagine!
When we were young we used to run into grocery stors and pop the cans and run it!
People were not happy that !
When the can is shaped like an egg, that’s when you know it’s time to eat it.
The oval shape mean pressure, well fermented!
Yuuk!
You “have” to open it outside!
You eat it together with boiled “Mandel” potatoes, finely diced red onions, dill and sour cream, put the fish and everything together on thin bread and then make it into a role.
In Sweden there are kind of festival in the summer when the fermentation is done, people gather eat this smelly and horrible fish and drink Snaps! (small shot of a strong alcoholic beverage).
I do not get it , I do not respect this tradition.
They are all eating this and faking the enjoyment , trying to prevent their faces turning into a shape like an a-hole, telling each other how good it is and how they wish the fermentation could have been going on for a bit longer, that would have given the fish a bit of extra sourness!
Such lies! Morons.
